Please Pardon Our Appeareance. Just Back From Riding

Last evening saw the return of Pete Bucheit, Dick Bregstein, Clyde Jacobs and myself from a four-day ride through West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The trip was a 48-hour reality show, in which four men of diverse backgrounds, tried with marginal success to pick-up waitresses half their age, while riding German motorcycles through breathtakingly beautiful country, on roads that must eventually lead to motorcycle heaven.

The details of that ride will be posted soon.

In the meantime, it gives me great pleasure to introduce Mike Evans, assuming a position he held when the local Suzuki dealer informed him it would cost $1200 to rebuild the four carbs on his motorcycle, which abruptly quit running three miles from his house.

My good friend Mike Evans -- who never misses an opportunity to point out my
character flaws, limited communications skills, and even more limited riding ability --
is delivered into my hands when his "Suzuki" is loaded onto my trailer, in a mechanical coma.
Evans demonstrates the position he assumed when presented the estimate to rebuild 4 carbs.

It was my delight to tow Mike back to the barn, showing his “Suzy” in its natural habitat -- on my trailer. (See Mike, there is justice in this world.) According to Evans, the riding position on this bike has enabled him to accept the dealer’s anal probe while keeping a relatively smiling face. Either that, or this may not be about motorcycle repair.

Fondest regards,
Jack

Hi Mike,

Hi Jack,

Mike I feel your pain. I have a Suzuki SV650--I love that bike and hope she never has to trailered. Jack, show some love ;-) Looking forward to hearing about your first ride trip of the season.

Jack,

You sure know how to kick a man when he is down. Still funny as shit though!

I dread the day when something like that happens to me. Knowing my luck, I will be somewhere in the boonies when it happens. Hoping it does not really cost that much to rebuild those carbs.

Dear Sharon:

Mike Evans is a warm-hearted individual who never misses an opportunity to spread a little joy around at my expanse. Had the situation been reversed, I can assure you he would have alerted the mainstream media.

Fondest regards,

Dear John C:

I thought it was funny as shit too. Do you know how you can tell when something is truly funny? You read again and again, and it still has a laugh-type ring to it.

Fondest regards,
Jack

Dear CPA3485:

If a break-down like this happens you, just make sure you haven't been slowly toturing the closest guy with the trailer.

Riding with Mike Evand and Dick Bregstein is like getting caught between veneral disease and athlete's foot. You don't know whether to, scratch, shit or go blind.

Fondest regards,
Jack

Hi Mike: (and Jack r, too)

You're lucky to have Jack as your friend. He is a kind person, willing to give you the shirt off his back. He has a heart of gold. And while he appears to be kicking you when you are down, he doesn't mean it

Hope you get that Suzuki back on the road soon at nominal costs

Ouchs that hurts... a dead bike and no funerals...
you you guys get it running again soon and back on the road.

$1200 to rebuild 4 carbs? I'd say that position would be correct. 4bbl Holley's can be rebuilt for $150 a piece. I'd advise screaming RAPE at the top of your lungs in the service department and/or finding someone other than a dealership to give you a quote.

your "just back from riding" post was quite funny, so long as you're not Mike I guess.

looking forward to the full ride report of the four day ride....the fact that you had even "marginal success" was due to the wounded harp seal look right?

Dear Bobskoot:

On the surface, Mike Evans is a kind, cheerful, pleasant person, who always seems eager to help. Yet in the aplication of this helpfulness, he will raise points that always seem to skewer my fragile dignity. He is so earnest as he goes about this however, that it is difficult to see him as Uriah Heep.

Mike is a great guy and he is rushing to get this bike on the road in time to moto-marshal a charity ride. You can measure a man by how he is regarded by his friends. Three Mac-Pac membes offered to lend him bikes. That says a lot.

Fondest regards,
Jack

Dear Baron's Life:

Bailing out Mike was a pleasure. He'd return the favor in a heartbeat. He cracked this bike up in the line of duty, moto-marshalling a charity event. But I think he will have his choice of bike's at this year's event.

Fondest regards,
Jack

Dear Allen Madding:

Mike's first concern was getting a bike to moto-marshal a charity event. It is my understanding that he is going to rebulid the carbs himself, and save a bundle. He's a pretty good amateur mechanic, and without the time constraint of the charity event would likely have told the dealer to go scratch.

I look forward to riding with him this summer.

Fondest regards,
Jack

Dear SGsidekick (Tena):

Lots of guys have trailers in this club and any would have been delighted to come and get him. I was the closest. This club has a srong sense of loyalty to each other that is simoply amazing. But it doesn't stop them from busting balls.

Thank you for reading my blog, and for writing in.

Dear Grandad43:

This last ride had just aboit everything -- adventure, excitement, suspense, and rum. What it didn't have was sex, or none that I am aware of.

But it is important to be able to identify an area in which the bar can be raised.

Thank you for loyally following my blog, and for sending in your comments.

Fondest regards,
Jack

When Mr Jack arrives in Key West, ticker tape will be flowing, bands will be playing, the Mayor and his entourage will be the welcoming committee, there will be a 21 gun salute, the Blue Angels will do a flypass, schools will be closed for the day, they will declare a national holiday in the Conch Republic, and they will roll out the Red Carpet.

Dear Mr. Conch (Bruised Badger):

Please be advised that I would set my bike on fire and let the fat sizzle off my ass until I was vapor, before I would I would find myself towed through the streets of Key West, behind a Triumph, a spectacle for the curious and idle.

Unless, of course, there was no other choice.

Thank you for reading my posts faithfully, and for your written support, which has become the first I check in the morning, and which most often prompts my second activity.

Fondest regards,
Toad

Dear Bobskoot:

I intend to arrive in Key West under the cover of darkness, check into a four-star hotel, savor a Planters Punch the size of my ass, and solicit the personal attention of a performance artist, who will be introduced to the concierge as my niece.

On my first full morning in town, I will frequent a number of places noted in a popular Key West-oriented blog, and leave BMW roundels chalked on the street.

And at some point on this trip, I will put a BMW roundel on a parked motorcycle, take its picture, and use it in a blog titled "Vindacation."

It will be the best motorcycle vacation that I have ever had. Yes indeedy...

Bobscoot, thank you for reading my blog like it was the Elevnth Commandment, for seeking my advice on so many things, and for incorporating my philosophy on the cosmos and random mating in your daily life.

You have no idea what it means to me. By the way, because of your great personal devotion as a friend and motorcycle devotee (read wild untamed spirit for that last bit), I hereby declaree you as a character in The Wind and the Willows too. Henceforth, you are "Mole."

Fondest regards
Jack (Toad)

Who gets to be the nasty little weasels that knock Toad out of the boat with a stone?

Just a question about Mike, was he singing 'Moon River' at the moment you took the picture?

BTW...When are you making your pilgrimage to the Adirondacks? If you give me enough time, I'll run as far down state as possible to meet you...and maybe we can ride more than five minutes before someone breaks a leg!

Cheers,
Cantwell

Jack Riepe said...

Dear Mike (Cantwell, not Evans):

I hope to be heading up that way soon. Some things have imptoved for me, while others are not so good. I Would really like to take a 4-day weekend, but circumstances are such that I will either have no time off, or lots of it.

Either way is going to suck, but less is better.

I'm going to sell off the topcase and plate for the K75. Are you interested?

Dear Jack,

Welcome back from West Virginia. I look forward to reading your truth-twisting tale of adventure for that Run.

Whether off-road by slippery slope, or off-road by trailer ramp, that Mr Evans can't seem to keep it on the ribbon very long!
